Special Initiatives of Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited1. HUDCO’s ASSISTANCE TO REHABILITATION HOUSING FOR NATURAL CALAMITIES HUDCO has promoted the idea of creating a Land Bank for the Shelterless category. In all, HUDCO financed schemes & implementing agencies are required to set aside 5 per cent of the layout areas for the shelterless category, to be developed as land bank for the housing needs of informal sectors/services personnel, once the overall layout is developed and life picks up. HUDCO has launched a programme for financing Village Abadi Environmental Improvement Scheme in villages where the population does not exceed 5,000. Under this scheme, project for the improvement of Village Abadi Infrastructure such as water supply, sanitation, drainage and electricity and so on, are supported by HUDCO. HUDCO and Hari Om Ashram Trust, Nadiad, Gujarat, jointly sponsor a Low Cost Housing Competition urban & Rural and Design Ideas Competition on an all india basis. The objective of this competition is to encourage innovative & creative concepts in planning & design of houses in rural & urban areas, use of appropriate building material & technologies, including use of non conventional sources of energy, with the focus on weaker sections & the under-privileged. Since the inception of the competition in 1974, 22 competitions have been conducted. this year the competition was held on the subject of “Competition for Building Centres". The criteria for assessment was based on innovative projects undertaken, use of cost effective building materials & technologies including use of agricultural & industrial waste based products, use of non conventional sources of energy, beneficiaries involvement & design capability for addressing the needs of urban poor. The jury selected 9 building centres for these awards. 1. Weavers Housing - Provision of housing linked with Pit Loom, Bench Loom or Jacquard Loom. 2. Coir Reelers Housing - Housing in clusters with coir reeling activity in central area as a group activity. 3. Beedi Workers Housing - Housing with provision for beedi rolling platform & storage for raw material & finished 4. Artisans Housing - Housing with adequate provision for their requirements like potters wheel etc. 5. Sericulture Workers Housing - Housing with provision of silk worm rearing areas. 6. Fisherman Housing - With provision for fish drying & storage etc. 7. Other Workmen Housing - Like tree plantation workers , hamals etc. DEVELOPMENT OF MODEL VILLAGES/SLUMS/BUILDING CENTRES 1. Development of Model Villages (Adarsh Gram) 2. Development of one model slum (Adarsh Basti) in each state & construction of Community Assets in each model slum. 3. Development of one model Building Centre in each state.
