Medical Development Congress Organized by Indian Council of Medical ResearchThis is the second Medical Development Congress (MDC) being organized by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The end of the twentieth century, and the beginning of the twenty-first century witnessed the convergence of two separate but intertwined developments Genomics & Proteomics . The ever-increasing popularity of genomic sciences in many scientific and medical fields leaves one wondering how much is hype and how much will indeed find its way in everyday practice The human genome sequence is completed; the sequences of the major model systems are completed; and multiple mammalian genomes will help to delineate most of the functional sequences. The impressive achievements in genomic sequencing over the past several years have yielded a wealth of information. At the same time, the knowledge of sequence information alone is insufficient to answer many biological questions concerning gene function, development, regulation, and biochemical kinetics and have defined the need for more comprehensive approaches. The research results available in this field reflect worldwide trends, as well as the growing importance and the many opportunities of genomics, proteomics and health research. The need for this conference is amplified by the fact that we are going through a period of rapid and dramatic change in life sciences/medical sciences research, in the platforms and tools available to researchers, and in the multidisciplinary skills needed to address and answer the major scientific questions in biology. India did not, fully embrace the genomics era early for non-participation in the Human Genome Project. But from 2002 institutes have been working on major initiative of the country in Vaccinology ,Cancer Genomics ,Vector Genomics ,Molecular Genetics of Haematological Disorders , Genetic Disease , Child Health , Population Genetics ,Molecular Basis of Diseases ,Reproduction ,Nutrition Genomics , Drug Development , Microbial Genomics, Pharmacogenetics , Neurogenetics, Bioinformatics etc. The Central theme is on ” Development in Genomics & Proteomics : its implication in health & disease” with focus on recent developments and application. Programme During the congress several issues under various sub themes are likely to get deliberated. The Congress aims to discuss some of the new initiatives taken by the organization at different levels and [rogram made thereof alongwith experience of individuals. It is planned to invite such experts under the following sub-themes : F Current Status of Genome research F Pharmacogenomics F Technological development F Genomics, proteomics and Bioinformatics F Capacity building initiatives F Partnerships among public health, medicine, industry, and academia F Ethical, Legal, and Social Challenges Organisers The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi has entered 94th year in the service of nation. It is an apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world. Intramural research is carried out currently through the Council’s (i)21 Permanent Research Institutes/Centres which are mission-oriented national institutes located in different parts of India and address themselves to research on specific areas such as tuberculosis, leprosy, cholera and diarrhoeal diseases, viral diseases including AIDS, malaria, kala-azar, vector control, nutrition, food & drug toxicology, reproduction, immunohaematology, oncology, medical statistics, etc. and (ii) 6 Regional Medical Research Centres which address regional health problems, and also aim to strengthen or generate research capabilities in different geographic areas of the country. The Indian Council of Medical Research is acknowledged leaders for making significant strides in its mandate of ‘Research for Better Health’. ICMR’s mandate gets implemented through several of its institutions and organization lives up to country’s expectations on all major fronts of its activity: research and development of vaccines and drugs for infectious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, filariasis, HIV/AIDS, research in the areas of modern biology like molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, fertility regulation and cancer. The Council is directing its resources in conducting research towards finding applicable solutions to problems being encountered in addressing all aspects of India ’s health problems including communicable diseases. Consultancy and human resource development, national and international collaborations and biomedical informatics and communication are some of the other important activities of ICMR. Having realized the urgent need to address the issue of that the sequencing of the human genome has generated widespread optimism about the application of genomics, proteomics and biotechnology to improving human health. Like last year Council this year has taken the responsibility of creating a medical forum where interactive dialogue, knowledge sharing and brain storming for joint strategy development, can be deliberated. The second thus congress would address issue of medical development specifically in the area of genomics & proteomics and provide an additional platform to leaders of industry, R&D institutions, government agencies, interested ministries and selected management experts who we believe shall share their experience, raise questions, suggest measures to increase the quality of medical care, increase its international competition and make it more affordable and accessible to common man.
