Laboratory Services of Export Inspection Council

EIC has a network of laboratories that form the backbone of the export inspection and certification activities of EIAs besides being offered to other clients on commercial basis wherever extra facilities or capacity is available. The main food laboratories in Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Kochi and Mumbai are supplemented by a number of field laboratories attached to various sub–offices for routine microbiological analysis of Fish &Fishery Products. The main laboratories other than the one at Delhi, which is for food grain testing, are equipped to cater to the analytical requirements of a variety of agricultural and food products to include frozen fish and fishery products, fruits and vegetable products, canned products, whole and ground spices, diary products, alcoholic beverages, cereals and their products, tea and coffee, raw and roasted nuts.

The main divisions of the laboratories include Microbiological division (general microbiology section, confirmation section, supporting facilities section), instrumental analytical division and the chemical analytical division. Under the microbiological division, the organisms which are generally detected and confirmed, as may be prescribed under the relevant standards of food products include total plate count, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Vibrio cholera, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Clostridium, Bacillus anthracis, Listeria monocytogenes, faecal streptococcus, yeast / mould, Bacillus cerus.

Under the instrumental analysis section, equipment such as high performance liquid chromatograph with absorbance and fluorescence detectors, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, gas chromatograph, electronic moisture analyser, automatic thin layer chromatograph, millipore filter are being used.

All wet analysis including estimation of moisture, macro and micro filth, acid insoluble ash, crude fibre, volatile other extracts, salt content, volatile oil content etc. is carried out in the chemical analysis division. Analysis and estimation of TVBN, Additives, Toxins, Pesticide residues, Solvent residues, Heavy metals, Indole content, Purity of chemical etc. are also carried out in this division.

The laboratories are capable of undertaking analysis as per AOAC, Macro Analytical Procedure Manual and Bacteriological Analytical Manual of USFDA, Procedures prescribed under EC Directives and Australian, Japanese and Canadian Food Laws are also used wherever specifically called for.

In addition, The laboratory at Mumbai, Pilot Test House (PTH) also has an Electrical laboratory which has been recognised by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under its Laboratory Recognition Scheme for:

Electric Irons and Safety Requirements : IS 366:1991
Ceiling Rose : IS 371:1979
Mineral Filled sheathed heating elements : IS 4159:1983
Domestic Electric Food Mixers (with and without endurance) : IS 4250:1980
Electronic Fan Regulators : IS 11037:1984

Besides the above, the laboratory is also equipped to test following items: (a) all types of household electrical appliances; (b) wiring accessories & electrical fittings © GLS & auto lamps (d) life jacket light

PTH also offers calibration services of PTH in the areas of mechanical measuring instruments & gauges and electrical meters to the industry.
