Having an Institution at National level, solely devoted to the Bridge Engineering to address specific issues related to planning, design and construction of bridges has been a long felt need of the community of Bridge Engineers in the country. To meet this objective and provide a common platform to planners, designers, construction agencies and research fellows/ institutes to share their experience, Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers (IIBE) was formed in the year 1989 with its Headquarter at Mumbai. It is a registered public trust under Bombay Public Trust Act 1950 (Section 29) F-14909 (Bombay) dated 15 Oct 1991. The Institute being for charitable purpose, is also exempted for payment of Income Tax, in terms of section 2(15) of the Income Tax Act- 1961 under section 80-G (1).
Over the period of time, it has developed as an effective forum to bring together practicing Engineers, designers, construction and R & D agencies including universities, Institutions and Govt departments at all level to fulfill the need of the bridge Industry.
With the passage of time IIBE, has expanded it activities in a big way and has established centers in every State to promote interaction at State level. Today it has 33 State and local Centers all over India.
To meet its objective of knowledge sharing among the fraternity of Bridge Engineers, IIBE has so far conducted 8 International Seminars, 19 National Seminar, 8 Workshops and Training Programmes in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabd, Warrangal, Pune and Kolkata and 5 National Round Table Conferences in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
In addition to give focus to Industry oriented re-search and development work, a National Bridge Research and Development Centre (NBR & DC) has also been established at Hyderabad. IIBE has also planned to develop suitable libraries containing books as well as video films to achieve this purpose. A central library containing all the documentation published by IIBE has accordingly been set p at NBR & DC, Hyderabad.
