The IIP is registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860. It was established in the year 1966 jointly by the Ministry of Commerce (now Department of Commerce) and the Packing and Allied Industries of the country. The Institute is headed by a Director. It is located at Mumbai. The main aim of the Institute is to undertake research in raw materials for the packaging industry, to organise training programmes on packaging technology and to stimulate the need for good packaging etc.
