Homoeopathic Remedies for Common Ailments

This provides general information about treatment of common ailments through simple remedies in Homoeopathy. It could be safely used for self-care and as a first aid. It is not a substitute for expert advice from a Homoeopathic doctor. Further, when symptoms persist beyond 2/3 days, it is advised to consult a qualified doctor. Homoeopathy does not believe in specific remedy for any specific disease. Medicines are selected based on the presenting symptoms of the case. Therefore, patients suffering from the same disease often require different remedies. In such occasion, the wisdom of the consulting Physician shall be the ultimate answer in treatment. This is presented as an easy-to- use guide where adequate medical facility is not readily available.

The medicines, the dose and the strength mentioned are safe even for the children. This publication is brought out keeping in view of the fact that there is a growing demand for Homoeopathic remedies and also as a tip of treatment for the very common ailments which if attended early may help in containing the diseases from further complications.

Some of the commonly encountered questions are answered in a question answer form. This is published as an IEC program of the Department of ISM & H, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. Any suggestion to make this publication more acceptable to the community is welcome.

What is Homoeopathy:

Homoeopathy is a scientific system of medicine using simple remedies to treat diseases. It is based on an ancient principle called Similia Similibus Curentur meaning let the like be treated by like. This means the substance, which in a healthy person could produce a set of symptoms, would cure that set of symptoms of a disease.

How is Homoeopathy different from other systems:

Homoeopathy advocates that majority of the disease processes in the body could be understood through symptoms. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homoeopathy believed that living beings have an inherent tendency to correct many of the disorders. The correct homoeopathic remedy encourages and assists the natural healing tendency of the body. The curative properties of the remedies used in Homoeopathy is studied on human beings through a scientific method called Drug proving. As such the remedies used are simple and safe.

What is a Homoeopathic Remedy:

The Homoeopathic remedies are said to initiate a healing process in the body’ natural force to correct the disorders. The modern science calls this as immune modulation. These remedies are prepared through a process called Drug dynamisation, where by the physical properties are reduced and the dynamic properties are activated by serial dilutions and potentisation.

Are these medicines safe:

In this brochure only, the most commonly medicines and the safest potencies are suggested. These are non-toxic, non-addictive and is in high dilution. It could be given safely to infants, children and even in pregnancy. It could be taken along with other drugs, provided the physician permits.

How to get these medicines

These medicines are easily available with all Homoeopathic Chemists. The medicines may be obtained in one or two dram glass bottles in number 30 or 40 pill form. Normally the effectiveness of the medicine will remain for about two years provided it is kept away from humidity, extreme heat, and sunlight. The bottle should be well corked and kept away from children.

What are the precautions while taking homoeopathic remedies:

The medicines may be taken preferably one hour before or two hours after the principal food. Too much spicy food may be avoided. Other substances advised to avoid are coffee, items with chicory, tobacco, alcohol, other stimulants etc. The medicine may be directly put on the tongue or medicines taken with a clean paper or spoon. Avoid taking medicine by putting on the hand.

What is an ideal dose.

Two pills dissolved in a teaspoon of clean water for infants.

3 pills for children

Four pills for adults.
