The Foreign Service Institute was established in 1986 to meet the professional training requirements of the officers of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), especially those belonging to the Indian Foreign Service. Fresh entrants to the Indian Foreign Service are trained here for about a year before being posted abroad to different Indian Missions. In addition, FSI has diversified its activities to include courses of interest to staff and officers of the Ministry of External Affairs at all levels. Apart from the Professional Course for Foreign Diplomats, the Foreign Service Institute conducts Familiarisation Programmes for Foreign Diplomats stationed in India and orientation programmes for the officers of the Ministry of External Affairs and other Ministries who are proceeding abroad on posting.
