Directors Desk of Directorate of Standardisation

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK

1. The Directorate of Standardisation was conceptualised over four decades ago in June 1962 under Defence Research Development Organisation with the objective of controlling item proliferation in defence services. In 1965, the Directorate was placed under the administrative control of Department of Defence Production as an independent inter-services organisation. To accelerate the pace of standardisation and codification activities, nine standardisation cells were established. These are located at Avadi (Chennai), Bangalore, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Ichapur (Kolkata), Jabalpur, Kanpur, New Delhi (now at Badarpur), Pune (alongwith a detachment at Ahmednagar). Later in year 2000, five more detachments came into being at Mumbai, Vishakapatnam, Kochi, Arvankadu and Nagpur. A training institute, ‘Institute of Standards Training’ was established at Pune in Oct 1999. The Organisation is recognised for its commitment, dedication and excellence in IT related work.

2. The Directorate along with its nine Cells and Institute of Standards Training at Pune is ISO-9001-2000 certified organisation.

3. Codification, which is one of the main tasks of the Directorate involves creating and maintaining a database of defence inventory having inter-service applicability. This in-turn facilitates Rationalisation, Standardisation and Entry Control.

4. The Directorate has formulated 2181 Joint Services documents, which include 1618 Joint Services Specifications (JSS), 152 Joint Services Guides (JSG), 342 Joint Services Rationalsied Lists (JSRL) and 69 Joint Services Preferred Ranges (JSPR). Apart from this 1973 Indian Standards have been adopted in the Services.

5. Directorate’s Institute of Standards Training at Pune primarily conducts training programmes on Codification and Standardisation. Courses on Information Technology and Networking are also conducted at the Institute. The Institute was awarded the ‘Golden Peacock Runners-up Award’ instituted by Institute of Directors in Aug 2001. So far, more than 800 officers and staff have attended the training programme in the Institute.

6. Realising the importance of Right to Information Act, maximum information which can be made public has been put on the website. One can see the details of this information by clicking on appropriate category under the ‘Standardisation Section’. All documents, which have been prepared by the Directorate, are listed under ‘Buy Standards’.
