HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The Directorate of Standardisation was conceptualised over four decades ago in June 1962 under Defence Research Development Organisation with the objective of controlling item proliferation in Defence Services. In 1965, the Directorate was placed under the administrative control of Department of Defence Production as an independent inter-service organisation. To accelerate the pace of Standardisation and Codification activities, nine Standardisation Cells were established. These are located at Avadi (Chennai), Bangalore, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Ichapur (Kolkata), Jabalpur, Kanpur, Badarpur (New Delhi), and Pune (alongwith a detachment at Ahmednagar). Later in year 2000, four more Detachments came into being at Mumbai, Vishakapatnam, Kochi and Nagpur. A training institute, ‘Institute of Standards Training’, was established at Pune in Oct 1999.
