As part of the cross cutting theme on the eradication of poverty, UNESCO (http://www.unesco.org/webworld ) launched a new pilot initiative to innovate and research social and technological strategies to put ICTs to work in the hands of the poor under its ictPR Project. The focus is not so much on technology itself, but on its innovative use to empower the poor with tools to change their circumstances. To test and introduce sustainable ICT access and utility models to empower the under privileged, UNESCO desired to produce a generic ICT browser that:
i. Acts as a one stop access & delivery mechanism for communities.
ii. Is customizable in terms of local language and content.
iii. Encourages local content production
iv. Allows easy access to relevant and authenticated information.
v. Enables efficient interactivity within and among communities
In response to UNESCO’s request for a generic software fulfilling the above requirements, National Informatics Centre (NIC), (http://home.nic.in) undertook the design and development of eNRICH.
