Nodes of Environmental Information SystemTo strengthen ENVIS in disseminating information pertaining to environment and sustainable development, ENVIS India is in the process of establishing Eighty Five ENVIS Nodes by involving Organizations, institutions, Universities and Government departments working in diverse areas of environment. ENVIS India has already established Eighty One partner nodes, which include Thirty government departments, Thirty Six Institutions and Fifteen NGOs. These nodes are supposed to create websites on specific environment related subject areas. The responsibility of the ENVIS Centres and Nodes are : Establishment of linkages with all information sources, and creation of data bank on selected parameters in the subject area assigned. Identification of information gaps. Publish newsletters and Bulletins. Develop library facility and provide support to the focal point on the subject area. Most importantly serve as interface for the users on the assigned subject.
What is the Environmental Information SystemENVIS is a decentralised system with a network of distributed subject oriented Centres ensuring integration of national efforts in environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to all concerned. Presently the ENVIS network consists of Focal Point at the Ministry of Environment and Forest and ENVIS Centres setup in different organisations/establishments in the country in selected areas of environment. These Centres have been set up in the areas of pollution control, toxic chemicals, central and offshore ecology, environmentally sound and apropriate technology, bio-degradation of wastes and environment management, etc. ENVIS focal point ensures integration of national efforts in environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to all concerned.

Ecology of Environmental Information SystemAn ecosystem is a complex set of relationships among living resources, habitats and residents of a region. And Ecology is the scientific study of the processes influencing the distribution and abundance of organisms, the interactions among organisms, and the interactions between organisms and the transformation and flux of energy and matter. India is blessed with a wide variety of ecosystems. But its ecosystems and ecology are assaulted increasingly. Ecological understanding offer tangible hope for addressing extremely complex and potentially devastating assaults on local, regional and global ecosystems. And this kind of understanding can only be developed when information on varied ecosystems and ecology reach out not only to policy makers but also to people at large. It should especially reach out to the weaker segments of the populations of developing countries like India, for these are the people who suffer most from a loss of nature’s services. Information on ecology and ecosystems help in identifying key issues as well as identifying trends, drivers and potential responses. These would provide lessons that would be of great value to the decentralized development planning.
Status of Environmental Information SystemSevere environmental degradation threatens to undermine the productivity and economic growth. Against this backdrop, the challenge for the Indian states is not only to minimize the environmental degradation but also to structure the economic decision-making process, keeping in mind the enviro nmental concerns to make the state’s development sustainable. And a sound decision-making process can only be based on reliable and timely information. Status of Environment (SoE) provides an analysis of the available information. It aims to provide details on the current status of the main environmental issues in the different states of India. It covers a wide range of environment related issues starting from human settlement, atmosphere, land, water, biodiversity to ecological sustainable development etc. It provides information on the various human activities that exert pressure on different environmental components. Impact of demographic shifts, urban sprawls, growth of the poor, changes in trends of industrial, commercial, and transport character, urban economic activities, etc. on air, water, land, biological environments, environmental health etc. are studied and analyzed in the report. The report also analyzes responses of the society, examines policies and strategies initiated under regulatory mechanisms along with their impacts. Besides, it identifies the information gaps, and highlights the main policy issues for decision-makers
Biotechnology Information of Environmental Information SystemIntroduction Recognizing the importance of information technology for pursuing advanced research in modern biology and biotechnology, a bioinformatics programme, envisaged as a distributed database and network organisation, was launched during 1986-87. The programme has become a very successful vehicle for transfer and exchange of information, scientific knowledge, technology packages, and references in the country involving 10-12 thousand scientific personnel. Ten Distributed Information Centres and an Apex Centre at the Department of Biotechnology, and 46 Sub-Distributed Information Centres, located in universities and research institutes of national importance, are fully engaged in this task. Six national facilities have been set up for interactive graphics based molecular modelling and other biocomputational needs. Four long term courses at the level of post MSc Diploma in Bioinformatics, at Poona University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Calcutta University and Madurai Kamaraj University, are fullfilling the long outstanding need for trained human resources in this inter-disciplinary area. The entire network has emerged as a very sophisticated scientific infrastructure for bioinformatics involving state-of-the-art computational and communication facilities. The computer communication network, linking all the bioinformatics centres, is playing a vital role in the success of the bioinformatics programme. Database development, R&D activities in bioinformatics, human resource development and a variety of services in support of biotechnology R&D programmes and projects, has made this programme very popular and useful to the scientific community. With an excellent cooperation received from various agencies of the Government of India, in particular, the National Informatics Centre (NIC), who provided the communication support, initially for E-mail and subsequently for full Internet access as well as some value added services, made it possible for the network to assume the role of a closed user group representing a scientific grid in various inter-disciplinary subjects of biotechnology encompassing, agriculture, health, and environment, besides other related subjects of scientific importance. The contributions made by the scientists and academicians at the University departments of the UGC, and national laboratories and institutions of the CSIR and ICAR, in which our bioinformatics centres are located, have resulted in excellent capacity building for use of a variety of information resources on the Internet. More than 100 databases dealing with different aspects and of relevance to R&D efforts in biotechnology are now available on the network. A national node of EMBnet has been established at the Centre of DNA Fingerprinting and Diognostics (CDFD), Hyderabad. Four mirror sites for mirroring important biological databases are being established at IISc, JNU, Poona University, and IMTECH to promote and support R&D activities in Genomics and Proteomics, the two emerging fields of biotechnology requiring critical support of genomic databases. With these resources now available on the BTISnet, it has now become a single largest information resource for all references to biotechnology related literature, scientific data, patent information, policy matters and related issues. Several Home Pages have been hosted on the Internet to give details of the services being provided to the scientific community. The Biotechnology Information Centre (BTIC), the Apex Centre, established at the Department of Biotechnology, is coordinating the entire network activities, including hosting of a Home Page on the activities of the Department of Biotechnology and its major programmes, as well as maintaining several directories and databases on the Research projects funded by this department. A Biotechnology Patent Facilitating Cell has recently been established which uses the facilities of the BTIC to provide full scale patent search services.
Delnet of Environmental Information SystemDELNET has been in operation since January 1988 and was registered as a society in 1992. It was initially sponsored by the National Information System for Science and Technology (NISSAT), Department of Scientific and Industrial Reseach, Government of India and is currently being promoted by the National Informatics Centre, Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India and India International Centre, New Delhi. DELNET has been established with the prime objective of promoting resource sharing among the libraries through the development of a network of libraries. It aims to collect, store, and disseminate information besides offering computerised services to users, to coordinate efforts for suitable collection development and also to reduce unnecessary duplication wherever possible.
Environmental Information SystemENVIS’s (Environmental Information System) mission is to provide access to and enhance the use of environment related information in India as well as the rest of the world, advancing understanding of different environment related issues and indirectly serving the needs of public and private decision making. ENVIS is a network that unites around hundred organizations in India, known as ENVIS Centres. It is dedicated to providing comprehensive, up-to-date environmental information and news. ENVIS exists solely to act as an information broker for environmental information in India. ENVIS network offers a mother portal which acts as a platform for inter nodal interaction. The entire portal has been designed and organized to provide with easy access to the multitude of environment related information available with the ENVIS Centres.
