Computer Aided DesignCollabCAD is a 3D CAD/CAM Software system. CollabCAD is an initiative of the CollabCAD Consortium comprising of National Informatics Centre , Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Nuclear Power Corporation, Aeronautical Development Agency, Gas Turbine Research Establishment, National Aerospace Laboratories, Structural Engineering Research Center. CollabCAD provides a total solution from product definition, reverse engineering, product visualization, numerical control ,Computer Aided Engineering, CFD. CollabCAD is developed on the Linux platform and is available on Windows and Linux (Red Hat and Mandrake). CollabCAD bundled with Knoppix is also available. It is based on open source software such as : 1. OpenCASCADE - geometric kernel CollabCAD is based on open standards such as XML, STEP, IGES, VRML as the purpose of open standards is to support common agreements that enable communications available to all. CollabCAD provides support to STEP files conforming to AP 214 & 203. CollabCAD offers a CAD/CAM Solution which is collaborative in nature. It enables multiple designers to work across a network and concurrently access the same design for viewing and modification. CollabCAD facilitates the conventional CAD/CAM capabilities like design, drafting, surface and solid modeling, feature based modeling, basic NC features, data exchange, scripting etc. CollabCAD also offers other niche features like reverse engineering to re-create Surfaces and Curves from a point cloud, Bar Code to link the designs to non CAD utilities like MRP, Meshing, Creation and linking of databases etc.
Consortium of Computer Aided DesignMembers of CollabCAD Consortium CollabCAD is being used by some of these organizations free of charge and all their in house solutions have been integrated with CollabCAD. 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai Each one of these organizations has a specific domain specialization / knowledge. (Some have domain knowledge in more than one). We are at present discussing with CSIO Chandigarh the possibility of their becoming a Consortium Member. We would like to look at CSIO as experts in Manufacturing and also in the Design for Manufacturing area. The proposal is to make CSIO a member of the CollabCAD Consortium. The reasoning behind the Consortium Concept is the belief that CAD / CAM is not a Computer Scientist’s domain but a practicing engineers domain unlike in the case of the Design and Development of Operating System, Compilers, Databases etc Therefore, we believe that the domain specialization plays a major role in the Design & Development of CAD / CAM software. Further, this is a knowledge intensive area and therefore a person (or for that matter even a student) who is good in Design or Manufacturing, can come out with a 3D Library of standard parts or of Tools for Machining. One does require a big corporate sector to come out with these utilities. The same is true in the area of Machining, for example 5-Axis Surface Milling, Visualization of Milling (using JAVA 3D), etc These are essentially Knowledge intensive. Therefore : i. There are a large number of developers who specialize in certain specific areas of their interest or specialization ii. There are a large number of areas in various fields like Mechanical, Electrical, Civil etc where extremely useful solutions can be developed. iii . There are areas like Mesh / Grid Generation, CFD, Finite Element Anaysis of Structures, Flow Analysis, Composites, Fracture Mechanics, Plastic Mold Design, Foundry (Gatings and Riserings) Analysis Solution etc which are High End Solutions that require large funding for development and are very expensive to develop and maintain. Many of these already exist as commercial solutions. Some are in the process of development / enhancement. iv. The era of a Single Solution Provider is over. This is the era of Collaborative Design, Development and Business. In all these cases, one needs a basic modelling solution with a good scripting interface to have access to the creation methods. We at the CAD Group,National Informatics Center, New Delhi, India have developed a CAD / CAM Solution, “CollabCAD", that has the following features: 1. Collaborative in nature: Multiple Designers can access the same part and work on it concurrently. We would like to remain focussed on the Base CAD / CAM as indicated above and we would not go into other areas as it would be spreading thin and we will never be able to deliver the goods. We will build CollabCAD on top of OPENCASCADE and we have been buying some consultancy from OPENCASCADE Group. What we are looking for in the proposed “Consortium” is additional solutions on top of either OPENCASCADE or CollabCAD. OPENCASCADE Group has some specialized solutions that are not open. We plan to get those integrated with CollabCAD in which event, OPENCASCADE controls their solutions, from licensing, pricing to providing support. Thus, every one who comes out with a solution either on top of OPENCASCADE or with a mechanism for IGES Input or Output can be integrated with CollabCAD Geometry Workbench which is also a CAD / CAM Solution. The OPENCASCADE Group would play a major role in this as it is they who will have to support and extend / enhance OPENCASCADE Geometry Kernal based on the industry projects. Thus, we believe that this will be beneficial both from Technical and Commercial point of view to every partner of the Consortium. This is more so because, the days of a single centralized Solution Developer / Owner / Provider are gone. We are in the Collaborative World where not only are the Designs Collaborative in Nature but also the development of Solutions. This would also help reduce the risks involved in a single developer of a complete solution as this would make the response to the changing technology very difficult. We invite Developers / Consultants to Join the Consortium by either making their Solutions available on CollabCAD or becoming value added consultants / trainers / sellers and any extension to the STEP / IGES / XML / STL Bus that you think is required can be taken up by us. We also would like to have any other specialized solution from your Group / Region / Country integrated with CollabCAD. We would be willing to discuss these issues. Please feel free to ask for clarifications, if any. Also, please feel free to give your views. Please contact us at collabcad@cad.delhi.nic.in, webmaster@collabcad.com
