BUILDING CENTRES
Considering the rising cost of construction, it has become extremely essential to adopt appropriate and cost effective Building Materials and Technologies which are structurally and functionally acceptable and at the same time cost effective. There are many cost effective building technologies developed by various R & D bodies including the works of Laurie Baker which can well serve the housing needs.
With a view to propagate, disseminate and promote these innovative and cost effective housing technologies and to transfer them to the field situation, the Government of India and HUDCO have launched a major programme for the establishment of a National Network of Building Centres or Nirmithi Kendras or Nirman Kendras.
These grass-root level institutional mechanism serve the role of:
1. Technology transfer on affordable and cost effective technologies from ‘lab’ to ‘land’.
2. Skill upgradation and training to construction workers on conventional and innovative technologies.
3. Production and marketing of building materials and components.
4. Construction of cost effective houses/building for various uses.
5. Extension of house guidance, counselling and information dissemination.
So far 585 Building Centres have been approved as a part of national network of building centres.
The Building Centres have developed into effective construction delivery system for affordable housing and also contributing to employment and income generation at local levels. The centres have imparted training on cost effective technologies to artisans & introduced technologies in production of building components & construction of houses & cost savings ranging from 15 to 40% over conventional costs. It is further envisaged to cover Building centres in all the remaining districts where the Building Centres are not in existence in the country.
BUILDING MATERIALS
As part of the mandate, HUDCO also extends financial assistance through equity and term loan support to Building Material Industries for manufacturing building materials and components which are innovative and alternates to conventional options and utilising agricultural and industrial wastes with energy efficient and environmentally appropriate options. A major thrust to support flyash based building material industries and alternates to timber is now taken up in different parts of the country. Till date, 28 building material industrial units have been covered with HUDCO assistance of Rs. 26.60 crores.
