Department of Archery Association of India

The two great Epics of India, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, describe at length the artistry and perfection achieved by Indian archers centuries earlier. The feats of Arjun, Eklavya, Karan and those of Lord Ram, Laxman, Bharat and Shatrughan are still recounted with great pride. Archery has been prevalent in India ever since and it is practiced to this day in the interior regions which have not been affected by modern civilisation. If you travel in the North Eastern part of the country you will find the bow and arrows used as part of the apparels. Inhabitants collect in large numbers in Meghalaya to watch the game of BOLA and place bets on their favorite archers. Modern Olympic Archery came to India in 1975 soon after the game had been chosen as part of the Olympic discipline in Munich West Germany in 1972. It took roots in India through the efforts of the then Chief Executive Councilor of Delhi, Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra who saw in it a chance to revive not only Indianism but a great tradition of India that was. The first National Meet under FITA rules was organised in New Delhi in 1973 in which more than 50 archers participated. They used bamboo bows and arrows made in Meghalaya and West Bengal. The Bengal archers were to the fore with their superior technique. Efforts were made by the Archery Association of India through its President Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra and Secretary General Shri Gopesh Mehra to have the game introduced in Asia and an Asian Archery Association came to be formed in Bangkok during the Asian Games there in 1978. Shri Malhotra was elected as the first President. India organised the first Asian Meet in Calcutta in 1980. The game progressed in fits and starts until mid-80s when it received a shot in the arm with most archers acquiring modern sophisticated equipment. The taste of frequent International competitions and the interest shown in this and other games by the Sports Authority of India a number of talented and promising archers emerged on the scene drawn mainly from the rural belt of India. Archers like Limba Ram, Shyam Lal and Sanjeev Kumar helped to put India solidly on the International scene. They performed well in the Olympic Games at Barcelona (1992) where Limba Ram won ranking among top six archers of the world. In the year 2003 Archery Association of India made several changes in plans for betterment of Archery in India. It introduced the National Ranking Archery Circuit Tournament with Prize Money. The immediate result was that the 2003 World Championships in New York, Indian Men stood 4th and Women 6th. In the Asian Championship to in the year Indian Men stood 2nd and Women 4th. At the 2004 Athens Olympics Indian Archers performed creditably but missed out on Medals. The crowing glory came in 2005 at the Madrid World Championship when Indian Men won the Silver Medal and the Women stood 4th. India for the first time also fielded a Compound Bow team at the World Championship in 2005.Their performances in International meets have generated fresh hopes and aspirations in the game and large number of sportsmen are now drawn towards it. The existing National, Asian and World records show the measure of achievements of Indian archers in the game which is not only traditional but inspires hope for the future.

INDIAN ROUND

In order to broadbase archery in India and to popularise it further we stated the Indian Round. It consists of shooting with bamboo/wooden bow and arrows. It is held in three categories: Seniors, Juniors and Sub-juniors. The first Indian Round competition along with the Modern Round Nationals were held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi in April 1995. It gave a big boost to archery in India as now even persons with low income and living in remote villages could afford to practice and participate.
