Animal Science of Indian Council of Agricultural ResearchSet up Deputy Director-General (Animal Sciences) is the Head of the Division. Five Assistant Directors General (ADGs)-ADG (Animal Health), ADG (Dairy and Livestock Products Technology), ADG (Animal Production and Breeding), ADG (Animal Nutrition), ADG (Economics, Statistics and Marketing), one Principal Scientist and three Senior Scientists are assisting DDG to fulfil its mandate. The Division has seven Research Institutes, one Bureau, four Project Directorates, seven National Research Centres seven All India Coordinated Research Projects and seven Network Research Programmes. Thrust Areas Animal genetic resources evaluation through field surveys supported by marker studies and ex-situ conservation of threatened breeds. Genetic resources enhancement of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig, camel and other livestock species through selection/cross breeding/embryo biotechnology for milk, draft, fibre; poultry for egg and broiler. Sustainable production systems and selection for disease resistance. Improvement and utilization of local feed and fodder resources, cereal straws and other agro by-products. Artificial insemination and embryo transfer technology for improvement and production of elite germplasm. Development and improvement of technologies for animal products and value-added products - milk, meat, fibre. Management and shelter physiology for optimum production and reproduction in livestock and poultry. Strengthening of Animal Disease Monitoring, Surveillance and Forecasting with development of diagnostic kits and immuno prophylactics using latest technologies. Intervention of newer drugs and indigenous drug formulations for various diseases. Environment pollutants industrial toxicants, mycotoxins and mycotoxicosis. Livestock production econimics and marketing. Achievements A fully operational information system on animal genetic resources of India covering all domestic livestock and poultry species has been developed. A number of new genotypes in cattle-Karan Swiss, Karan-Fries and Frieswal developed for increased milk production. Murrah, Nili Ravi and Surti buffaloes improved for milk production. Three new high producing strains of sheep for fine wool, carpet wool and mutton evolved; and a strain of ‘Mohair’ goat developed Two hybrids of fast growing poultry broilers and four high producing layer strains developed and released. For promoting backyard poultry production suitable strains e.g. Grampriya, Vanraja and Giriraja have been developed and supplied for distribution in tribal areas. Immuno-biologicals, vaccines, immuno-diagnostics, indigenous drugs and medicines against various infectious and non-infectious diseases of livestock and poultry, developed. Monoclonals have been developed for the diagnosis of various diseases and reproductive disorders. ELISA-based tests for precise and rapid diagnosis of various livestock and poultry diseases developed. Effective disease monitoring and surveillance resulted in reduced morbidity and mortality. Process, techniques and equipment for the manufacture of the quality dairy products with reliable quality testing methods developed. Methods of preparation of different recipes and preservation of meat and eggs developed and quality testing protocols for egg, meat and meat products standardized. Blending of camel hair and Angora rabbit wool with other fibres and converting those into yarn suitable for making finish goods standardized. Nutrient requirements of various categories of livestock for different production functions studied and standards set up. Technologies for utilization of cereal straws, agro-byproducts, conventional and non-conventional feeds developed for different areas of the country. Area specific mineral mixtures developed for better growth and improved reproductive efficiency. Embryo biotechnology techniques standardized and production and multiplication of elite germplasm undertaken. Draft performance of camel evaluated under normal and stress conditions. Studies on physiological, nutritional, behavioural parameters and diseases undertaken and standards for management laid down.
