Agricultural Extension of Indian Council of Agricultural Research

Set up

Deputy Director-General (Agricultural Extension) heads this Division. Three Assistant Directors General (ADGs), and one Principal Scientist, two Senior Scientists and one Deputy Secretary are assisting the DDG (Agricultural Extension).

Thrust Areas

Technology assessment and refinement for identifying the location specificity of technology under various farming systems.

Vocational training of farmers.

Training of extension personnel to update their knowledge in frontier areas of technology.

Providibg single window delivery system of technology products, services and information through Agricultural Technology Information Centres (ATIC).

Development of gender specific technologies.

Achievements

Large network of front-line ICAR-SAU extension system consisting of 415 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), 10 Trainers’ Training Centres (TTC), 70 IVLP centres and 44 ATICs.

Training of 6.0 lakh farmers and farm women every year in agriculture and allied fields such as crop production, plant protection, livestock production and management, soil and water management, farm machinery and tools, and home science.

Vocational training covering 1 lakh rural youths in the areas of poultry, dairying, piggery, beekeeping, fisheries, fruit and vegetable preservation, maintenance and repairing of farm machinery and tools, and hybrid seed production.

In-service training programme to upgrade the knowledge and skills in transfer of technologies in agriculture and allied areas for 60,000 extension functionaries in KVKs and TTCs.

Front-line Demonstration (FLD) on oilseed and pulse crops benefiting 22,000 farmers. FLDs are conducted to demonstrate the production potential of newly released production technologies at the farmers’ fields in a given farming situation.

Training of trainers in frontier areas of technology such as dryland agriculture, animal production, horticulture, freshwater acquaculture, marine fisheries, hill agriculture, agriculture engineering and women in agriculture in TTCs.

Multi-locational advance varietal of 17 selected crops in 60 contres under irrigated and rainfed conditions under different cropping sequences in a joint collaborative Technology Evaluation and Impact Assessment Project with Crop Science Division.

Technology Assessment and Refinement through Institute-Village Linkage Programme (IVLP) in 70 centres located at the ICAR research institutes and SAUs.

Identification, assessment and development of gender-specific technologies at the National Research Centre for Women in Agriculture, Bhubaneshwar (Orissa). Training of farm women in farm implements and tools at the sub-centre of NRCWA at the Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh).

Establishment of 44 Agricultural Technology Information Centres (ATICs) in ICAR Institutes and SAUs.

These centres will provide a ‘Single Window’ delivery system for technology products, services and information available in the institutions to the farmers.

Networking of 108 Krishi Vigyan Kendras under Agricultural Research Information System (ARIS).
